I am a college student. I am 23 years old and just now starting my freshman year. After high school I knew I would not be able to afford going to school. I knew of many college students who were drowning in debt. I also knew a lot of college grads who had a degree but no job. This seemed silly to me so I thought of other paths I could take to set my future up for success. I joined the United States Marine Corps. After serving 4 years in the Marine Corps I moved back home to Cincinnati and started school. Serving my time in the military guaranteed me free school. So it is hard to put myself in the shoes of the average college student. My peers are graduated now with a degree, no job and a lot of debt. After reading the two passages I can conclude that college is over priced. However I do not think it will change anytime soon. I found myself relating to Archer more than Kamenetz. Archer realized the problem and thought of an alternative, like myself. Kamenetz realized the problem and is advocating for the younger generation to take a stand. I think both authors bring up good points and as a class we agreed that Kamenetz was more of a reliable source due to her background. However I think Archer did a better job at getting his message across. With Kamentz’ point to join a PAC group could do justice but it would be a very controversial movement considering politics are involved. I think with the college debt problem going on, students need to realize there will be no change unless a lot of them take a stand. There are several options to cure the college debt problem. It is now in the hands of the students if they think paying full price is worth it, go to trade school, join the military or join a PAC group.
